Original Medicare

A government sponsored health insurance. People with Medicare are 65 +. Also available to those under 65 with certain disabilities or end stage renal disease.

Part A

Hospital, Hospice, Rehab, Skilled Nursing Benefits

Part B

Physician care, outpatient services and Medical benefits.

Medicare Advantage Plan

Independent insurance companies are contracted with the Federal Government to manage the healthcare of their members by providing both traditional Medicare benefits and more.

Part A + Part B

Medicare Advantage Plans must cover Part A and Part B benefits.

Many plans include Part D prescription drug coverage and additional benefits like vision, hearing, and dental.

Medicare supplement EXPLAINED

A Medicare supplement (Medigap) insurance, sold by private companies, can help pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S.

If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs. Then your Medigap policy pays its share.

A Medigap policy is different from a Medicare Advantage Plan. Those plans are ways to get Medicare benefits, while a Medigap policy only supplements your Original Medicare benefits.

Medigap policies don’t cover everything.
Medigap policies generally don’t cover long-term care, vision or dental care, hearing aids, eyeglasses, or private-duty nursing.

Reporting Medicare fraud & abuse

Medicare fraud and abuse can happen anywhere, and usually results in higher health care costs and taxes for everyone. Some examples include:

  • A provider that bills Medicare for services or supplies they never gave you, like charging you for a visit you never had, or a back brace you never got.
  • A provider that charges Medicare twice for a service or item that you only got once.
  • A person who steals your Medicare number or card and uses it to submit fraudulent claims in your name.
    A company that offers you a Medicare drug plan that Medicare hasn’t approved.

How to spot & prevent Medicare fraud & abuse

You can help spot and prevent Medicare fraud and abuse by:

  • Comparing the dates and services on your calendar with the Medicare statements you get to make sure you got each service listed and that all the details are correct.
  • Checking your claims early.
  • Checking the receipts and statements you get from providers for mistakes, and calling your provider’s office if you think a charge is incorrect. The person you speak to may be able to help you understand the services or supplies you got, or they may realize a billing error was made.
  • Knowing what a Medicare health or drug plan can and can’t do before you join.

About Your Medicare Card

Your card has a Medicare Number that’s unique to you — it’s not your Social Security Number. This helps protect your identity.

The card shows:

  • You have Medicare Part A (listed as HOSPITAL), Part B (listed as MEDICAL), or both.
  • The date your coverage begins.
